Castle In The Clouds
Chicago 2025
One of One – There will be one and only one of these ever printed. As rare as a painting.
I spent a little time with a friend yesterday at the Art Institute of Chicago, admiring the works of some great artists of our time. My hope was to draw a bit of inspiration from them and study the way they used light, composition, color, and texture to create their masterpieces. The experience really got my creative juices flowing.
I then visited the photography portion of the museum, and I have to admit I left feeling a bit underwhelmed, disappointed, and annoyed at the lack of work being displayed, variety, and its general location in the museum. Photography feels tucked away in the basement next to the bathrooms and is an afterthought. Zero disrespect to the artists who were on display. What they had was great, but very minimal.
As I returned home motivated by the entire experience, a weather event crept over the city, casting a blanket of fog over downtown Chicago. It was like it was a sign sent from Apollo (Greek god of the arts) himself, to fight for photography and its place in the arts.
I stepped out onto my balcony in awe of the scene in front of me. This had to be a panorama to give scale to what I was witnessing. Of the half dozen panoramics I composed, this one struck me right away as the one. Something about the way the city seems to flow towards the viewer. The V shape and the overall sense of a floating city in the sky made me select this as THE ONE!
