Easily one of the more picturesque towns in all of Italy, Pietrapertosa operates as if time is standing still. Everyone in this small mountain town seemingly knew everyone else. Shops closed early, the community came together to talk in the evenings, and kids played outside under the streetlights at night. So much has happened to the world in this wild age of technology but Pietrapertosa seems to be just fine with the way things were.
My mornings here would start under dark skies waiting for the sun to create something spectacular. At 630am sharp the local coffee shop owner would lift his gate to the store and three other men would pour in. I didn’t speak an ounce of Italian and the men did not speak a word of English. Somehow though, we managed to have a basic morning communication where we all left curiously respecting each other’s direction in life.
I would later see these same men gathering at the coffee shop for their evening beers and a few cigarettes before they would make their way down to the wood smoke chimneys below. I didn’t get the invite this time but I imagined they would come home to a warm familiar welcome, a steaming plate of pasta, all before nodding off in some creaky old rocking chair. Sounds like it’s from a fairytale? That is exactly what Pietrapertosa is.
