Fire and Ice

Iceland, 2014

Limited edition fine art print of 6 – I had traveled to Iceland to walk the black sand beaches photographing the ice formations that was back up onto shore creating a wonderful display of sculptures. What I did not take into consideration was where those ice formations I had seen were coming from. A massive ice cap, the largest in Europe, is slowly retreating leaving behind a huge lagoon full of ice. This ice is being pulled out to see then pushed back on shore by the waves where they often end up stranded. Another factor I was not expecting was because Iceland is located this far north, the sunsets can last for hours. The most incredible golden light spread across the horizon. The blue trapped in the glacier fragments illuminated like a neon sign. Nature has brought tears to my eyes many times. This time was one of them. Photo © copyright by Derek Nielsen.
